Captain Ian Coates
Master Mariner, Captain Ian Coates, has been a prominent figure in the offshore industry for over 30 years, establishing SMC back in 2006 and driving the company towards its current position as a globally renowned provider of services to the renewables, oil & gas, utilities and marine sectors.
Ian’s wealth of experience, accrued whilst holding a series of high-level managerial positions across a period of over three decades, has culminated in him becoming a leading marine and HSE consultant.
Further to his role as Managing Director at SMC, Ian holds positions on the boards of Team Humber Marine Alliance (THMA), the Marine Survey Association, and Humberside Offshore Training Association (HOTA), in addition to delivering training courses as a Global Lead Trainer of eCMID Accredited Vessel Inspectors.
Sue setup SMC alongside Ian in 2006 and has been instrumental in growing the company over this time. She has been involved in all aspects of the business, looking after clients, consultants and suppliers alike, as well as managing the growing team within the office/operations division. More latterly she has been in charge of HR, compliance and advising on the continued strategic direction of the business.
In recognition of their remarkable achievement, SMC were awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade 2018, the UK's highest business award. SMC has developed into a truly recognised, trusted and long-term partner to a growing number of clients within the Renewables and wider Energy Industry.
Dean is an effective Project Manager with a background in both technical and managerial roles. With experience as both an electrically biased Offshore Technician, and later as a Marine Coordinator, Dean possesses a comprehensive practical knowledge which he is able to apply when overseeing SMC’s operations.
Dean has been involved at management level across a catalogue of projects globally, covering construction, operations and maintenance, service campaigns and acting as Account Manager to a number of SMC’s most significant clients. Dean is currently working towards achieving an MBA in Business Administration.
Edward has spent his career managing, diversifying and expanding businesses. Following a successful career in the Armed Forces, in 2008 he joined EPI, where his commercial experience, drive for growth and business acumen helped develop the company into the 2nd largest seismic QC consultancy worldwide, culminating in being presented with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2013.
In 2014, he led a Private Equity backed management buyout, overseeing a service line diversification strategy involving international growth, acquisition, debt refinancing, fund raising and corporate restructuring in the one of the harshest oil & gas environments ever seen.
With a strong background in the marine environment he has overseen simultaneous operations in 25 countries with a consultant base of 120 people working in a variety of roles where teamwork, efficiency and cost have been paramount.
Business Development Manager
A graduate of the University of Sheffield, George has worked in Business Development across an array of industries worldwide, since 2013.
In his client-facing role, George remains an ever-present point of contact for clients, partners and suppliers, with a particular focus on the identification of, and engagement with, new business streams, globally. In keeping with his responsibilities as Business Development Manager, George leads SMC’s tender composition and bid processes.
